In September of 2017, I walked from my home in Echo Park, Los Angeles CA, to the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, CA. I left around 10 in the morning and arrived around 5 PM. I then ate a slice of pizza, jumped in the ocean, and took a Lyft back east for band practice. It left me with a weird sunburn. It also left me with a more defined concept of Los Angeles as a gradient. Cities are not dichotomies (or trichotomies, etc). A neighborhood is not so much a separate entity, but a piece of a continuum. Of course, the opposite is true as well. It was refreshing to experience the gradient aspect at a slow pace. The architecture, the people, the streets, the age of things, the storefronts; the language changes slowly.

I recorded the entirety of my walk because I’m a bit of an obsessive archivist. Also, I was interested in the natural flow of sound, specifically in a city, specifically in the city of Los Angeles.

An album is a constructed flow of sound; how do I make an album out of city sounds? I could record them and throw them together like a collage. Or I could walk through them and let them collage themselves. There are probably many more approaches. This time, I did the second one.
